HR Wants Me To Resign My Job Before Giving Me the Offer Letter!

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Before extending an offer in writing to someone, HR wants them to give their notice. What should they do? What would you do?

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter I’m a career coach that helps people be more effective with their job search, with hiring people, managing and leading. You know. all the stuff related to the workforce.

Someone asked the question, it was kind of shocking to me, and their situation is one where HR wants them to resign their position before they receive the offer letter. What should they do?

This has to be a very junion person. So if you are, I understand this is not your normal terrain but the simple answer is, no. That’s what you tell them. “No, I’m not going to resign my job without an offer letter.”

“Why do you need to do that?”

“Simple. Because there’s no proof that they’ve made you an offer unless I have the piece of paper or the email in hand, that has a signature from them, by the way indicating that they’ve made you an offer for a particular amount of money etc etc.. Otherwise, they can always turn around and go, “we didn’t make an offer.” They’re hanging you out to dry now I can guess that they’ve lost some hires because they made lowball offers, the person went back to give their notice with the offer letter in hand and negotiated a better deal. That’s their problem. That’s not your problem.

Your job is to take care of yourself and your family and right now you don’t have a job offer until you have that piece of paper and everything else that they say is a deflection. Warning.

“Don’t you trust us.”

Right. That’s exactly right.  I don’t trust you. There’s no proof that I have an offer. If you guys tomorrow afternoon decide we lost this project. We don’t need them I’m out of luck.”

So very simply, very politel,y with smile on your face, pause for a second.

“No. No, I’m not gonna do that. Whethert to provide me with an offer letter or not . . . that’s your choice but I’m not resigning without the offer letter.

I’m Jeff Altman. Hope you found this helpful. Hope you never go through this because this is nonsense.
