How to Keep Your Employer from Knowing You’re Looking When You Update Your LinkedIn Profile

I’m in my mid-40s and all of this news about layoffs is making me feel insecure. I haven’t looked for a job, written a résumé or updated my LinkedIn profile in 20 years. Do you recommend keeping both updated or waiting to see if I need it? I don’t want my employer to think that I am looking for a new job.

Personal Branding on LinkedIn

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. And there was an article in The New York Post yesterday that someone asked one of their reporters. The scenario is ‘I’m in my mid 40s and all this news about layoffs is making me feel insecure. I haven’t looked for a job, written a resume or updated my LinkedIn profile in 20 years. Do you think keeping both updated or wait to see if I need it, .I don’t want my employer to think I’m looking for a new job.

The fact is most people are fearful of their employer finding out even though it may be the best thing for them, because it may make the employer aware that they need to do more to keep this person, rather than risk losing them. However, this person has that concern. So let me just address it.

That is on LinkedIn, there’s an area where you have privacy settings and with privacy settings, when you’re about to make an update, you go there, and you turn off notifications to people that you’re connected with on LinkedIn. The reason you do that is maybe connected with people in your firm and you don’t want them to be notified that you’re making a change to your profile. You just want to make the change so you’re up to date, you’re attracting recruiters and others contacting you who might have openings for you. So go to privacy settings, and turn off the notifications to people that you’re connected with that will solve that problem.

Now, should you update your profile, resume and such? Absolutely. And you should be doing it every three or four months as a matter of course, because come review time, it becomes a way that you’re up to date on what you’re what you’ve accomplished, what your role, responsibilities, successes have been, your impact on the organization. It will serve you.

So update your profile. After you’ve made the changes. Turn the notifications back on. And you should be safe at that point.
