It’s Time to Look for a Life Boat

Finding a job during a recession can be challenging, of course. However, it’s important to stay focused and take a strategic approach to your search, while at the same time having patience, perseverance, determination, and a positive attitude. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS coaching career advice globally, because I make things much easier for people, even when times are difficult.

So here are 10 ways 10 tips to navigate a job market during a recession. And I want to give you a preamble. Even when there’s not a recession, the idea is to Recessionbe proactive and do a few of these things as early as you can, while you’re not out of work so this way, you’ve got stepping stones in place, and can find out . . . well,  can really make moves that other people can’t.

So the first thing is focus on in-demand industries. Some fields may be more effective than others. And thus, by focusing on in-demand industries, whether it be tech or healthcare or any field whatsoever that is hot or hotter, it can increase your chances of finding a job.

Number two, of course, is update your resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile, making sure that they’re up to date, and tailored to a specific job. Not sending out the same generic resume all the time but tailored to a specific job you’re interviewing for or want to interview for gives you an advantage. Focus on relevant experience, skills and accomplishments in the resume. And at the same time. Well, I’ll just simply say, connect the dots so that they don’t have to think so much about whether you’re qualified.

Number three is network. Reach out to your professional network– former colleagues, alumni from your school, people that you know socially to let them know you’re looking for work.

Recession-Proofing Your Career: Stand Out

Now, for some of you job fairs make sense. And for others, go into professional association meetings, virtual events, or job clubs make sense. Try talking to people. See if you can build new relationships in different venues.

Fourth, build your online presence using LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook to connect with potential employers and showcase your skills and experience. Well, it’s really helps you connect because on tools like LinkedIn, recruiters are pointed to people who connect with their firm or follow their firm I should say. And thus, it gives you a leg up in there trying to contact people for jobs they have open.

Fifth, I can’t stress this enough. Proactively practice your interview skills. Brush up on it by doing mock interviews with friends, family, or career counselors in order to be more confident during interviews. I’m going to tell you, order my video course The Ultimate Job Intervoew Framework at TheBigGameHunter.us/courses It’s terrific. It’s gonna teach you how to interview and how do you stand out in a good way.

Number six, be flexible. During a recession you may need to be open to part-time work, temporary work, maybe even an internship to keep yourself mentally active and gain experience and build your network.

Seventh, be proactive. Don’t wait for job ads to show up in your inbox. Research companies you’re interested in and reach out to them directly to find out about potential openings.

Eighth is consider freelancing or consulting or temp work. If you’ve got a specialized skill set, consider freelancing or consulting. While you’re looking for something full time, it may lead to a desire to do this permanently. But consider as a stepping stone to keeping your mind active and making a few dollars while you’re looking for work.

Ninth is volunteer because you’ll get experience. While volunteering, build your network and showcase your skills to people.

Lastly, take care of yourself. Don’t kill yourself with work. Sleep, exercise, and maintain healthy relationships and by doing all of this, you’re going to focus on your job search and increase your chances of landing a job more quickly.
