How to Explain Why You Were Fired During a Job Search

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Here are some tips  on how to explain being fired during a job search:

  • Be prepared to discuss it. Don’t avoid the topic or hope it won’t come up. Practice what you’re going to say with friends or family members.
  • Keep it brief and focus on the positive. You don’t need to go into a lot of detail. Briefly explain what happened, and then focus on what you learned from the experience and what you’re looking for in your next role.
  • Take responsibility for your part. If you made a mistake, own up to it. This shows that you’re accountable and that you’ve grown from the experience.
  • Frame it as a learning experience. Even if the firing was not your fault, you can still talk about what you learned from the experience. This shows that you’re resilient and that you’re always looking to improve.
  • Don’t badmouth your former employer. Even if you’re angry or upset, resist the urge to say anything negative about your former boss or company. This will only reflect poorly on you.
  • Showcase your skills and experience. Remember that the interview is still an opportunity to sell yourself. Focus on your strengths and what you can bring to the table.
  • Be confident and enthusiastic. A positive attitude will go a long way.

Here are some examples of what you could say:

  • “I was let go from my previous role because of [reason]. It was a difficult experience, but I learned a lot from it. I’m now looking for a role where I can [skills and experience].”
  • “My previous role wasn’t the right fit for me. I’m now looking for a company where I can [values and goals].”
  • “I’m grateful for the experience I gained at my previous job, but I’m excited to move on to a new challenge.”

The sources stress the importance of networking and building relationships. Talking to people in your network can provide you with job leads and insights into the hiring process. Remember to take care of your mental and physical health during your job search. Staying positive will make the process easier and will help you present your best self to potential employers.
