How to Crush Your Phone Interview (And Actually Get Called Back)
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Phone interviews exist for one reason: to cut you from the candidate pool. Companies sift through mountains of resumes and use phone screens as a quick elimination tool. Your resume already got you this far—now you need to prove you’re worth meeting in person.
Why Most People Bomb Phone Interviews
Here’s what trips people up: they treat phone interviews like casual conversations. They answer calls while watching their kids, doing laundry, or multitasking on their computer. Since the interviewer can’t see them, candidates think professionalism doesn’t matter as much. Wrong. The recruiter is listening for red flags, and distraction shows up loud and clear in your voice.
Prepare Like Your Career Depends on It
Research the company before the call—not just their homepage, but recent news, social media posts, and what problems they’re trying to solve. Then prepare specific examples that prove you can handle what they need. Most phone screens ask predictable questions: “Tell me about yourself,” “Why this role,” and “Walk me through your resume”. Write out your answers and practice them out loud until they sound natural, not rehearsed.
Control Your Environment
Find a quiet room with zero background noise—no barking dogs, no lawn mowers, no screaming kids. Keep water nearby because nerves dry out your mouth fast. Have your resume, the job description, and your notes in front of you, but don’t read them word-for-word or you’ll sound robotic.
Show Energy Through Your Voice
Stand up during the interview—it makes your voice sound more confident and energetic. Smile while you talk, even though they can’t see you, because it changes your tone. Keep your answers concise and relevant to what they’re asking. Use verbal acknowledgments like “I see” or “That makes sense” so they know you’re engaged. And for the love of all that’s holy, have thoughtful questions ready for the end of the call.
