How to Answer “How Do You Delegate Responsibilities” in a Job Interview

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

This is an interview question that might be asked of a fairly new manager to see what their thought process was.

Tough Interview Questions: Tell Me About Your Work History

People hire me for no BS job search, coaching and career advice globally, because I make job search and succeeding in your new role much easier for people.

Here’s how to answer this tough interview question. Ready? I believe that delegation is a key skill for any manager because it helps to optimize time and resources, develop the skills and confidence of team members, and foster a culture of trust and collaboration.

I delegate responsibilities by following these steps. First, identify the tasks that can be delegated, and the expected outcomes and deadlines for each one. Next, I select the team members who have the right skills, experience and ability, as well as availability to complete the tasks. In doing so. I also consider the development needs and interests and try to assign tasks that can challenge them and help them grow.

Third, I communicate the tasks clearly and provide the necessary instructions, resources and support. I explain the purpose and importance of the tasks the expected results in quality standards and deadlines and milestones. I also clarify the level of authority and autonomy that each member has and the frequency and method of reporting feedback. I next monitor their progress and performance, while providing them with constructive feedback and recognition. Doing this helps resolve any issues or difficulties.

At the same time, I offer guidance and assistance while avoiding micromanaging and respecting their autonomy and creativity. Finally, I evaluate outcomes and the process of delegation, and identify any areas for improvement or learning for both them and me. I also acknowledge and appreciate the team members contributions and celebrate their achievements and successes.

By following these steps, I delegate responsibilities effectively and efficiently and ensure that the tasks are completed on time and with high quality.
