How to Advance Your Career After A Layoff

I contributed to an article on MoneyGeek that asked, “What tips can you share with people who want to advance their professional careers after getting laid off?” This is how I replied.
Learn the lesson that your network and connections are statistically the way you are most likely to find a new job. Don’t let your network die on the vine, only to be reactivated when you need something from them. It doesn’t look good for you or make people likely to help you if you act as a taker and only reach out to people when you need something from them. These are the people in your career and life who know, like, trust, and respect you and may likely advocate for you for positions involving advancement.
Stay current with your professional knowledge and skills by taking classes online. Many are free or inexpensive. For example, LinkedIn Learning is free for paid LinkedIn users. Take classes to stay updated and train yourself in new and relevant skills.
You can always take a job in your current field and then look for the upgrade once you are on board.
