Getting Your License | Career Angles

When we learn to drive in the United States, we receive a learner’s permit with limitation about when and where you can drive. Usually, a learner has to drive with an adult who has a license; in my state, they can’t be on the road after a particular hour and, even after they pass their driver’s test, there are restrictions on what they can do for a year.

My son was 16 when he passed his driver’s test and often I would go out on the road with him. He made mistakes. He would drive slower than he should; sometimes, he would stay in the left lane after passing and, of course, there was the speeding ticket.

But, after a while we (and he) learned his lessons and started driving without us in the car and did very well. You can see the lessons he learned and how he has internalized them. He’s anxious about some things but he does darn well.

Many of us work as though we only have a learner’s permit. What’s keeping you from taking your road test, getting your license and heading down the road?
