Getting Feedback from Your Manager in Two Questions

The simplest way to frame a feedback session or feedback request is to ask for a two-question review. The first question is “What do you think I’m doing well?” This is the harder of the two questions because often our mind slips to criticism.
The second question is “What one or two things do you think I should work at improving?” That focuses them on one or two things and, if they slip into multiple criticisms, reply with, “Whoa! I can only handle 1 or two things at a time! Let’s circle back after I’ve made progress on these.”
Remember, their suggestions about improvement areas are helpful AND may also tell you your manager is not good at communicating their wants to you.
Keep doing this regularly until they have to think about the areas of improvement. In those meetings, ask if s/he has noticed any change in your performance around their suggestions for areas of improvement. If they tell you, “No,” tell them what you’ve been doing differently. They may not be aware or haven’t noticed them yet.
