Forget Time Management
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
There have been countless books written about time management. Most can be distilled to two points.
Today’s is going to be a quick No BS Management Advice tip designed to help you be more effective in your role. Often, people are pull in lots of different directions.
Yanked here. Yank there. Yanked all over the place. And I know from my time working in search, how easy it is to succumb to that.
I learned pretty quickly that I needed to focus on the most important thing of my day. You need to do much the same thing. You’re carrying multiple priorities and things suddenly get dumped in your lap. These are other people’s priorities. How can you offload them? How do you set what your priority is for a given day, a given week, a given month, stick to it and deal with all the adjustments that you have to make along the way, never losing sight of what that most important thing is? Never forget about it, even if you have to record it, even if you have to create daily reminders for yourself in your phone in your calendar.
Always focus on the major priority because there’s always someone else who’s going to be out there trying to steal your time.
There are tons of books that are written every year and very few of them have anything new to say. What you can do, fundamentally, is write down everything that you need to do, create tick marks next to the things that are most important for you, focus on those, drive the bus to accomplish them most of the time. What other people are trying to do is manage their time while well. Don’t let them do it at your expense. Okay?
