When you, as a manager, ask for a favor and trumpet the nice collaborative environment when you need something done, your people have an expectation of reciprocity.
“My (son/daughter’s) parent-teacher meetings are this evening and I need to leave a few minutes early.”
“My daughter’s recital is tonight. I would like to get home to enjoy her get ready and perform.”
“My son’s basketball game is this afternoon after school. They are playing for the town championship. I want to leave early.”
If you pull rank when someone on the team asks for something, you’ll lose credibility and put the lie to the masquerade of being nice.
It’s like telling them their personal time has no value and I need it! NOW!
If you want to be a leader and not a manager, you have to put some heart into your job.
