Swimming in the Same Dirty Water
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Growing up in New York as I did, street vendors were part of the scene. I attended CCNY and we had the legendary Raymond the Bagel Man selling pretzels to us. I have no idea why he was called the bagel man; after all, he was selling big pretzels to us with all that salt on it. He would stand out on cold winter days and during demonstrations on campus on Convent Avenue with a big smile on his face. No one had a mean word to say about him.
In other parts of Manhattan, we had vendors selling Sabrett hotdogs in a bun with the choice of sauerkraut or onions done in ketchup. They sat in the same water all day until a customer walked up to order one. They were nicknamed, “dirty water dogs, “because they swam in the same dirty water all day long.
Usually, most of us are swimming the same dirty water all day, doing nothing different. One day is like another except lunch. For me, lunch may be the same most days but I try to make each day a little different.
Some days I’m writing again. I’m working on another book after not having written one in more than five years. I’m thinking about what makes me different from the million other people who seem to be doing career coaching. It’s pretty clear to me how fake many of them are. Unlike many who worked in search for more than 40 years and have deep expertise around job hunting, many of them have thin experience over a year or two. I know that’s my real differentiation.
I’ve interviewed people who’ve hired other coaches who just don’t have the strategic and tactical knowledge. They swim in the same dirty water of “dream jobs,” and other forms of BS, trying to mesmerize people into hiring them, spending a lot of money, and doing nothing for them. But they claim to be coaches.
Many of you keep swimming around in the same dirty water, forgetting to think about what makes you special. What makes you different?
You think you’re better than others, but do nothing different from others. You want a higher income but are just like everyone else.
Another dirty water dog, swimming in the water, waiting to be ordered.
