Facilitating Involvement | Career Angles

I was facilitating a meeting of the board of a 3-person startup. Two of the board members were dominating the conversation while the third and I listened.

“What do you think about what you’ve heard so far,” I asked the third person. He offered a clear insightful analysis of the points he heard plus another option that the dominating members had not considered.

Smiles emerged in the room as they started to now huddle as a threesome.

If you’re running meetings, there are people will tend to dominate for many reasons including, but limited to, political advantage, extroversion, and strong opinions. Always remember the person or people who are listening (or not) and ask for their input about what they have heard so far and what they think.

Their ideas matter and that you communicate that their ideas matter to you is important.
