Everybody’s Lying in a Job Search | No BS Job Search Advice

Everybody's Lying

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

How can you tell an applicant is lying to you?

Their lips are moving.

How can you tell an employer is lying to you?

Their lips are moving.

How can you tell a third-party recruiter is lying to you?

Their lips are moving.

Everyone is lying during the job search process.

Job hunters exaggerate the capabilities.

Employers talk about a “great opportunity with a terrific team of people.”

The good third-party recruiters or just the messenger of the lines between the two parties; they don’t add any additional lies into the situation.

I’ve never heard of employer say to a job hunter, “We’ve got huge problems here. I inherited a team of imbeciles. My predecessor was fired and so was hers. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out my butt is on the line and I want to hire someone to save it.”

Now someone may say that they heard that or something similar. It is obviously an exception.

No one ever talks about the last four people that sat at the same desk as you and left. If asked, an employer would say, “They left for a better opportunity.”

Really. What made it a better opportunity?

And then they would like to you.

Employee engagement in the United States is the best in the world–32%. That figure is unchanged for the last 10 years. What does that tell you, folks?
