If you manage people, a key part of your job is to hire people who will create an environment where people will thrive.
Instead, many managers ignore the need to consider the environment and how a person will succeed or fail both in their personal aspirations and in their ability to succeed at a firm based upon their environment and the group culture.
Environments tend to win and grind people down to a common working caliber and achievement orientation. It’s why “brown noses” are mocked—they dare to defy group norms by trying to do more by getting close to their manager.
