Employer Complaints About Younger Millennials and Gen-Z | JobSearchTV.com

Bloomberg shared an article about the complaints that recruiters have about younger millennials and Gen Z changing their mind about opportunities. Don’t be compliant.

From Paycheck, to Purpose

I want to talk to those of you who are younger professionals about the BS that’s being discussed about you behind your back. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I do no BS career advice for people related to job search, hiring more effectively, management, leadership, career transitions and resolving workplace issues. I’ve worked in recruiting for a long time and filled a lot of positions.

And the BS that they’re they’re starting to say, is really fascinating. Their complaining, I’m gonna use this from a Bloomberg article that was released, recruiters are complaining that you are discovering that your jobs have more stress than you were led to believe and thus, you want to be paid more, get additional time off. And their response is to say, ‘you told us a number; we exceeded that number.’

Notice, there’s no acknowledgement of the fact that they withheld information from you. Thus, it leads to them complaining. This is corporate and third party recruiters, about younger professionals. Currently, that’s younger millennials and Gen Z professionals  but it could be with any demographic in the future.

Thus, my reminder to you is to dig in deeper about the corporate culture. And thus, when they ask you about money at the first interview, they’re trying to lock you down to a number, don’t buy it. Just start off by saying ‘I need to know a lot more in order to feel comfortable revealing a number. ‘But I need a number from you.’ ‘Let’s talk about that after I’ve had a chance to meet with the hiring manager, get a sense of what their expectations are like, meet with the team, talk about what the day to day is. All I’ve seen as a job description or a job ad. That’s not enough to provide me with information suitable to give you a number. So let’s talk about it afterwards.’

And if they still push you into the number, ‘I’ll give you a number. But I’m not committing to that number until I’ve actually met with other people. So if that’s a problem for you, let’s move on, have a great day, and I’m out here.’ Be tough with them because they’re whining. That’s what it is. They’re being babies about this. That you’re not going to be compliant with them and their systems. And to that I say, ‘Good.’

Do not be compliant, yet. Pick your time to be compliant. After all, they’re trying to put you on an assembly line and process you through their systems in ways that suit them but don’t necessarily suit you. Push them, don’t succumb to it. And I know that’s not what employers want me to tell you. But that’s the truth of it.

You’ve got to stall until later to give them a number. And even when you do, before you do, you ask about the salary range for the position. And if they don’t want to give it to you, say, ‘we can talk about this later on.’ ‘You’re not willing to give me information, I’m going to withhold from you.’

And if they say, ‘Oh yeah, we’re gonna bring this to a conclusion.’ ‘Okay, have a great day. Hope to talk to you in another occasion.’
