Don't Restrict Who You Try to Connect To

Don’t Restrict Who You Try to Connect With

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

People often limit who they try to connect with and who they try to network with to their own detriment. Here’s why not to do that.

Stupid Networking Mistakes: Thinking Email Is Good Enough

People impose limitations on themselves when they network or try to connect and those limitations come from this idea that I should only do things up to a point. Let me give you an example.

When I first started doing coaching, one of my first clients was referred to me by a CMO of an Italian Leather Goods firm. I have no idea who this person was,Networking but he referred someone who he cared for who he thought I could help.

You don’t have to do connecting with people just in your city, or your town. You can do connections with people, internationally or nationally, and receive benefits from it. After all, you know people who live elsewhere, right? And they may, too. And in living elsewhere. And in finding work where you live. Others may know people who live in proximity to you or can help you locally, even though they don’t live there.

Another great example is, I only want to talk to managers and above this way they can refer me into their companies, and maybe even hire me. How about their staff? Their staff is often more reachable than the manager and above. Thus, they’re able to get an employee referral bonus if they refer you when you’re hired.

Don’t just simply talk to people in your city. Don’t just simply talk to people who you think can hire you, because you may not be able to connect with them. And their staff may be more motivated to help.

So again, these are limitations. And one of my favorite ones is recent grads, who won’t talk to people who graduated from their school a year or two before them, who’ve already landed their jobs. ‘I don’t know them. Why would they help me?’ Because they want to help other students from your school.

So I’ll just say, just talk to everyone that you can. Make them aware of what you do and what you’re looking for. Develop relationships and by that I don’t mean you have one conversation and expect them to help. Use informational interviews as a strategy. Work at developing relationships. I’ve got great courses on informational interviewing on my website, thebiggamehunter.us. They”ll give you questions to ask him in conversations to engage in that will help. Hope you have a terrific day and, most importantly, be great. Take care!
