I have 20 years in industry and 14 in consulting. I want to showcase I’m open to both.
2 Sentences to Get All the Informational Interviews You Want
So, if I’m understanding you correctly, you want to have a resume that indicates that you’re open to industry and consulting. You’re an experienced guy. You spent 20 years in industry in the last 14 in consulting, I would have two different resumes.
The first one is to lean into consulting. And the second one is to more of a functional resume that talks about your background. And again, I’m going to pause for a second and say, is the work that you did in industry as relevant as to what you’ve done in consulting? You know, times have changed a lot in industry over the last 14 years.
And thus, the relevance of your older work may not be as significant as the current work. You may use a cover letter or a cover email to indicate that you’re open, that you’re looking for something in industry, and leaving consulting, because you want to put down roots with a single organization and be more successful with it. So, my concern is, your experience in industry is in the antiquities.
And when I see 14 years, that’s 2010. Barack Obama was present at that time. That’s a long time ago.
He was in his first term of office. We were in the Great Recession back then. And times have changed a lot, haven’t they? And I suspect the significance of your work, he tells me he’s an AVP with 34 years of experience.
No, do not put over 30 years of experience, because right off the bat, you’re branding yourself as being an old guy. And trust me, I’m an old guy. I’m significantly older than you.
I know about old guys. Describe yourself functionally. Do not do 34 years of experience.
I had more than 40 in recruiting, and I left that a long time ago. So, I’ll just simply say people hire me for No BS Job Search coaching and career advice globally, because they make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier. Have your own branding statement.
That’s an example of an elevator pitch that I came up with using the elevator pitch video at JobSearch.community. Go there and work with it and come up with your own version of a statement like that, that reflects your experience. What do people hire you to do? Think of that for a second. That’s what more than matters to them.
Not that you have 30 years of experience. And I’m sure you’ve seen people with 30 years of experience. That’s really one year, 30 times.
