A hotel stay gave me a reminder of what not to do to be memorable on a job interview.

Whenever I’m About to Do Something

On a recent trip north my wife and I made, we stopped at a hotel a little past midway along our trip to stay overnight, and we were disgusted by what we discovered in our hotel room. And it applies to you in a job search. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier.

What disgusted us? The smell of cleaning products in the room. It’s like the room was just cleaned and it had this disgusting chemical smell in it. Now, I’m not normally sensitive to these things like my wife is, but boy, this was awful. And we checked into another room in the same hotel. It was better. There was still cigarette smoke in there.

That brings up what I’m going to tie together for you, and that is for those of you who wear perfume or cologne. You don’t know if it’s going to be too strong for the interviewer. And thus, you may think it’s delightful and they should get over it, but sometimes you can’t. It’s just too strong a fragrance. I’ll simply say rather than risk turning off someone and being memorable for the wrong reason, skip the cologne, skip the perfume when you have an interview and thus avoid being rejected. Because people get afraid that you’re going to smell like that when they work with you. And that’s true of the interview team, it’s true of the HR person, the hiring manager, everyone along the way. Be conscious that other people react differently than you.
