8 Body Language Signs That They Aren’t Buying What You’re Saying

I’m going to talk with you about three things most people don’t understand about an interview with the screener and being aware of this is going to help you make a great impression and help you land the job you want.

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search advice and coaching globally, because I make the process so much easier for people.

Now, I want you to understand the role of the screener. The screener is not there to get your hired–they can’t do that. They’re not the decisionmaker of the hiring decision. They are there to screen you, kind of like in the Gold Rush days in the United States in California, and they were sitting by the river with a screen and a pan and dipping it into the water and trying to find the gold knowing that the crap would would drift through. They have the ability to reject. They don’t have the ability to hire.

They can also influence the decision. And they can also influence the offer. It’s why I tell people all the time, win over the screener, because when it comes time to making the offer, if there’s a disagreement about comp, often the screener is there to push a number. And if you haven’t made them fall in love, then they’re probably going to just be kind of dismissive. So they have input into the hiring process. But they’re not the ultimate decision maker. They’re influential with regard to comp at the time of the offer.

Sometimes they’re there to gather information for a hiring committee. In some cases. They’re not the only person who’s going to be involved with hiring, but they may gather information for the committee which will help them make a final decision. So this is post-interviews. And the committee may be trying to decide certain things, and they’ve got some questions about you. So the screener is going to go back, try and connect with you and see if they can get answers to questions. Again, this is not about them saying yes, it’s about them doing data collection for the decision makers.

How you interact with other people during an interview can be just as important as your answers to questions. The screener is going to be paying attention to how you interact with them, as well as how you interact with other people that you meet with during an interview process. Part of your job is to bring your personality out and not be another robot that they talk with. So often when people interview, they paralyze their personalities and try to be professional. And as a result, they present themselves in a way where they don’t seem any different than anyone else who’s being interviewed. Big mistake. Because if you can’t differentiate yourself on the basis of personality, it becomes a coin toss for them. So the screener’s there as part of this process to make sure that they’re choosing someone who they think will fit in( which I think is nonsense, by the way). But that’s their thinking about this. And personality is a big part of this.
