Do This At The Beginning of Your Job Search

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Doing this at the beginning of your job search will help you be prepared in case your current firm gives you a counteroffer.

At the beginning of your job search, make up a list of reasons why you’re looking for something and answer this question–“What’s most important to me in the next job or organization? What will I need to see or hear to believe it’s a good choice?”

Make up a long list of things that are important to you. Prioritize the list, because if your firm extends a counteroffer, and sometimes they will, you want to make sure that they’re not just simply improving the money. You want to make sure they’re dealing with some issues on the list.

For them, buying you off with an increase in salary is easy. It’s the other stuff that’s hard. So make a list of what’s important to you in the next job or organization in case you get a counter.
