Do Something Hard Today

Do Something Hard Today

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

I ran the New York Marathon. The first year, I worked my way up to running a 10K race. In the second year, I trained, ran and finished a half marathon. In year three, I ran and finished New York.

The 10K race was hard. Central Park is a hilly course and I huffed and puffed and finished.

The half marathon was harder. It was an even hillier course with very little flat running. I huffed and puffed and finished.

The marathon was the hardest of all–the temperature was 78 degrees which is hot for a long race, there are many more people in the race so you have to zig and zag to get around them at times. But I finished despite a case of heat exhaustion.

I’ve noticed that too many people take the easy way AND, worst of all, waste time criticizing people who do the hard things that don’t always work out.

When you do something hard, you develop physical and mental muscles as well as resilience. There are days I didn’t feel like training but did it anyway because if I developed the bad habit of not training, I wouldn’t complete the race.

Seven of us began training together. Two of us ran and finished the race.

We did it by doing something hard each day.

Too many people want to be coddled without the balance of being challenged.

Do something hard for you each day.
