Culture Fit: An Intangible Factor Getting Hired | No BS Job Search Advice
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Standing Out on an Interview
When it comes to hiring, there’s an intangible factor that many people ignore: culture fit. It can make or break a job candidate. For instance, a candidate may not fit the company’s culture if he or she is an older parent with three kids who likes to stay up late. But this individual might bring additional complementary qualities to a company, department or group, such as historical knowledge of the industry and an understanding of customer needs. In this case, the candidate’s experience and cultural fit should be evaluated carefully.
A company’s culture is also an important factor in employee retention. A positive company culture will attract and retain like-minded people who share the company’s values. Hiring for culture fit can build a network of brand advocates and attract new talent. It can also diversify the company’s talent pool. While culture is an intangible factor, it should not be underestimated whether the company is small or large.
Culture fit goes far beyond personality. It’s a psychological connection that transcends skills, experience, and personality. This connection will make or break a person’s future success. Ultimately, culture fit affects someone’s performance.
When interviewing, interview questions should be geared towards a person’s capabilities, while also highlighting the organization’s values and ethos. During the interview, demonstrate enthusiasm and engagement. Also, be able to socialize well and engage with the interviewers during the process. As you think about answering interview questions and realize that your answers guide interviewers to the next question. If you can make your answers work to your advantage, you will be chosen more often.
Remember, culture fit in hiring is a significant, yet often unquantifiable, factor. Don’t ignore it because you can’t figure it out by staring at a LinkedIn profile. There are other ways to figure it out.
