Can a Job Offer Be Rescinded/Withdrawn/Retracted? | JobSearchTV.com

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
The answer is simple and there are ways to avoid it.

Is It a Good Idea To Tell Them You Already Have an Offer?

Can a job offer be rescinded, withdrawn, retracted, taken back, whatever term you want to use? I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, a career and leadership coach. I used to work in search. Did it for a long time.

The simple answer to the question is, yes. The primary reason that offers get rescinded or any of the other terms that I used, is you stopped communicating, you start to hide, something isn’t right from your standpoint, and you don’t communicate with them what’s going on. As such, they start to think that you’re a problem. And they’ll start putting pressure on you to communicate. Like, ‘we need you to send the offer letter back with your signature. Could you get that to us by tomorrow or we’re going to have to pull the offer,’ because they’ve been reaching to you for a week, and you haven’t responded in any way, shape, or form.

So if you have a personal problem, you know, there’s an illness in the family, there’s something going on with the kids, that sort of a thing, well, let them know. ‘I’m sorry I haven’t been communicative. My (fill in the blank) had a heart attack. I’m traveling. I don’t see myself starting on this date. I could see it being two weeks later at the latest. And if I can do it sooner, I’ll be happy to. That they know how to handle.

On the other hand, if you go radio silent, and stop responding to anything, that gets them worried. Thus they start making threats and demanding that you communicate or else. Once they start with the ‘or else,’ the clock is ticking, and they’re going to rescind the offer unless you start to communicate.

So can they do it? Absolutely. It’s in their interest. They have to do it. They’ve got a job that needs to be done. It has to be filled, and you’ve made them worry.
