Referencing an article on WorkItDaily, coach Alex Freund asked, “Is this an art? Science? Culturally driven? Personal? Societal? Regardless of your perspective it is TRUST based and without it it is very difficult to prosper. Especially at work.”
I responded, “I wish it were so easy as these pointers. I am of the opinion that in the workplace, we start with forced assimilation.
Managers who think they know how to hire for fit, hire people who they think will fit in but don’t. From there (again, these are opinions), people look for how someone responds to situations to see if that person is like what they were told they would be. For the new employee, the same is also true AND, as too many discover, it is not. That is why turnover has been so high since #returntowork began. How do you #connect? It starts with keep your initial promises. In networking situations, listen with your heart, as well as your head. Test what you understand the other person said (If I understand you correctly, you said . . . ). This gives the other person an opportunity to talk more. As I described in a video called “The Headhunter Secret to Knowing You Did Well on an Interview” https://youtu.be/ERDvp-tGf98 the more they talk, the more they like you. Listen more; talk less. Although that describes interview situations, getting someone else to talk more, and you being seen as a great listener helps break down barriers until you feel comfortable contributing. Smile appropriately and look serious appropriately. All of one or the other brands someone in ways they may not like.”
