We are in a world of experts who know very little but have hired people who have elevated them into expert and success status. They run organizations and they create change all from the vantage point of being seen as the expert at what they do and what they have done. What can you do to launch yourself as an expert?
- Write articles. Writing articles doesn’t always have to be in major publications (although it helps). You can write from LinkedIn and sharing with your connections, with the public, and in groups. Google indexes LinkedIn articles very well. Get yourself to write at least once per month.
- Host a podcast. Podcasting is very easy these days. You can host a podcast on anchor.FM and have it automatically uploaded to Apple podcasts, Spotify and other platforms. You can do a monologue for a few minutes weekly or host a show where you interview someone. It is pretty easy to get guests.
- Create video for YouTube. You may not be the most handsome or attractive person on the planet but you know something. Talk to the camera but use a real microphone.
- Speak to small groups. Speaking to a group and having the group or you promote the engagement online, done over time, will put you in the position of Google finding you and your expertise for people looking for someone like you.
- Write and self-publish a book. Amazon makes publishing easy. Think about your expertise as well as stories to relate to your successes. Get to work!
- Be interviewed on TV, podcasts and elsewhere. There are so many platforms available and so many people hosting shows who need experts to speak with in order to fill their schedule. Reach out to them.
- Speak at a conference. Present at the conference. Your expertise can translate very well in front of an in-person audience. The first time I did this I remember being nervous as I walked out on stage but once I got past a first few minutes, I perform like the All-Star that I am. The same thing will happen to you to. Before doing this, go to a few Toastmasters meetings, join and get involved. Practice speaking there in front of a supportive (and small) audience.
Start small. Work your way up. Don’t stop. Make the time. The more senior you are the more important it is to demonstrate your expertise and have it easily found by the people you want to attract.
Start now.
