I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a career and leadership coach and I've used
to work in recruiting so I have a perspective on job hunting that's
designed to help people find work more quickly
I work as your allied to try and help you land that role rather than my hold
work which was as a recruiter which was about filling jobs with clients and
someone asked me a question that basically translates into would I be
making a mistake taking the first job I'm offered. Now, I know the typical answer is
absolutely you should never take the first job that's offered to you what if
there's something better out there and I had always start off with the premise of
you taking some time to figure out what's important to you in the next job
or organization what will you need to see you're here to believe it's the
right choice for you now if you've taken the time to answer that if you then took
the time to prioritize your answer to focusing on the first four or five items
on your list you know what you're really looking for and if this firm matches it
if this firm exceeds that these things why not accept the offer because there
might be something else out there bird in the hand worth two in the bush
maybe there isn't something else better out there maybe it best it's equal to
You've spent a lot of time and money going out on interviews to find out that
you really can't find something better now in good times you might in bad times
not but I'm going to go an extra level and say to you for those of you were in
experiencing financial trouble or you've been out of work too long
you shouldn't fool around with it yes there might be something better and you
have a need NOW. Assuming this is not a situation where you have that instant
requirement than needing to land then what you can do is tell them I'd like a
few days to think about it I'm thinking favorably and negotiate when you respond
no one's gonna say it okay if I get back to you in a month
no one will say yesterday but let me come back to the core of this which is
if this firm is giving you what you want in terms of the work, career advancement,
money of course opportunities things along those lines
if the work is marketable why not say yes because there may be something out
there silly and all you're gonna do is worry and agonize and put yourself
through torture. Why would you do that?. Why would you do that? I'm Jeff Altman.
