Always Turndown a Counteroffer—What I Think

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Someone posted a message on LinkedIn that was universally affirmed–always turndown a counteroffer. But should you? This is what I think.

Reasons to Accept a Counteroffer

The recruiting industry has done a good job of training people to think you should never accept a counteroffer. Paul Hawkinson wrote an article years ago that is the foundation of it, “Counteroffers: The Road to Ruin.” It laid out an idea that recruiters adopted to get people to turn down a counteroffer and a recruiter to save his/her fees. The fact is that many should be turned down and some accepted. Making a blanket statement of any sort without personal questioning has you act like sheep of a different flock. Decide for yourself. The herd can be wrong.

The Counteroffer You Shouldn’t Accept
