Let me explain when the best time is to ask when you might expect feedback and how to phrase it.
I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a coach who helps people with job search,
hiring more effectively managing and leading generally workplace related
stuff the question for today is after a job interview is it okay to ask when you
should expect to hear back from your interviewer now I'm going to pick up on
very specific language after an interview it's really too late after an
interview you should be doing it during the interview is one of the questions
that you ask. Not the first ones. Those should relate to the job but one of the
later questions you can ask is could you give me a sense of your timeline about
next steps don't necessarily use the word feedback feedback is one of those
overused terms. I like "timeline for next steps" because it's not in their
script so ask them about their timeline for next steps and whatever they say you
can always follow up with another question so for example if they say we
have 37 more people to speak with and we'll get back to you when we're ready
you know you might as well just sit there and wait because the statistical
probability is you're not going to be hearing them ever again let's go for a
more normal response I've got two or three more people to see this week I
would expect I'll be done by early next week so if I haven't heard from you by
Wednesday or Thursday is it okay if I drop you a quick note to follow up yeah
sure sure sure," and if they give you the yeah sure or
"sure, no problem," that's a good piece of information. If they
say to you know wait we'll get in touch if we're interested that's another piece
of information. Sends a different message, doesn't it? So, at the interview is really
the time to ask this question not only afterwards because normally afterwards
what you're doing is you've already waited two weeks haven't heard anything
and then you're sending a message if they were really interested they'd be in
touch sooner and you can take this silence is really being feedback hope
