A Mom Gives 2 Weeks Notice. They Want 4 | JobSearchTV.com
A mom needs to leave after giving 2 weeks’ notice to take care of her 4-month-old son who she no longer has childcare for. Her manager points out the contract she signed that insists on 4. What does she do?
What to Ask Before Starting a New Job
Someone wrote to me describing their situation. It read, “I’m in a situation. I told my manager, I need to leave in two weeks or so, because I need to look after my four-month-old son and there’s no one else who could look afterhim. Now, they said they agree with me (which tells me that they argued about her leaving altogether), but after a month as the contract shows. I don’t feel they support or care about my situation. I even asked for some solutions to work either from home or have six weeks, at least parental leave, so I could find a solution.” She says she doesn’t know what to do. “I can’t leave my son alone. And the manager doesn’t seem to respond fast enough, or is against me in whichever way I choose.”
So obviously, she’s describing a situation that’s awful. Now, this is a US centric answer. Number one is leave after two weeks. You told them two weeks; they’re refusing. You have a contract that says four. Let them sue you, let them sue you. They’re not going to do that. They’re going to demand four weeks. And they don’t really care about whether or not you, as a mom, can take care of your child.
And if they start threatening you was you pack your stuff up the last day, just very simply say, “You can give me a rough time. But I can also go online and tell people what you and you, in particular, did and said. You can point to a contract, but you’re not giving me any help. And I have no other help. So I’m going to care for my son. Do you want me to leave him at home by himself? He’s four months old. So when you hired me, you know, I agreed to this. And now circumstances are different. So if you want to give me a bad reference, I’m just going to tell people all over the world what you folks do.” They’ll back down.
So you never want to really get confrontational, but they’re attempting to be confrontational with you and you have to stand up for yourself. And for women who bear responsibility for young children, firms understand that you have responsibilities and those that don’t sometimes need to be confronted in order to, shall we say, change their views, and stop being so 18th century.
