Our host’s daughter is in her early 20’s and starting her career after school. Good grades. Smart. Most of her jobs in school have been in retail and her father thinks she might be good as a recruiter.
She has an offer to work as the right hand for a small insurance broker. The broker was a customer of hers in a store. She will be sent to school to get her licenses (all paid for) and, to accommodate her father, I sat down to speak with her.
We chatted for a while and I learned that the broker hasn’t trained anyone before and is kind of a “lone wolf.”
My observation that may be helpful to you is to be clear about what you are getting into and what the expectations are. Working with a “lone wolf” often means that you will disappoint them at some point and risk being fired. What will it mean when you interview with the “poor communicator” manager? Or maybe with the 35yearold who has never managed a 50 year old?
Know what you are getting into.
