How Recruiters Steal Your Best People: Having Unrealistic Expectations of Them

If you’re interviewing for a C suite position, one thing should be obvious to you– You can’t walk in cold and not be prepared. You can’t just wing it on your answers. You need to be prepared with information that shows that you looked at the organization and have definite opinions about them.

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS coaching and career advice globally, because I make things so much easier for people. And here are nine questions  I can’t give you answers for because it really depends on the organization that you’re interviewing with. So, you know, think of it from the standpoint of it being a homework assignment to be thought of in advance of an interview.

So as you’re meeting with individuals within the firm, you’re meeting with the Board, meeting with advisors, you have an opportunity to be prepared and to think in advance about how you might address some of these questions.

The first one is, what’s your long term vision for our firm? Pretty straightforward question. Where do you see your firm going forward? How would you help our employees connect to that vision? How would you inspire your leaders and staff to fulfill it? What are your top three goals for our firm? What will get in the way of your leading the achievement of those goals? How have you overcome the barriers you’ve encountered in the past to attaining company goals (because they’re always obstacles, right)? What is our company doing well? What can our company be doing better? How would you go about improving on the things our company could do better?

So these all require some thought. They involve research on your part and that should be done because it will set the stage for your success on this interview. Again, you can’t just walk in winging it. You have to do some preparation.
