Job search can be a rollercoaster. I’ll simply say it leads to feelings of depression. Focusing on your emotional self-care and support systems is going to help you stay grounded and help you land your next job more quickly.
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search advice, and coaching globally, because I make the process much easier and better for people. Now, let’s look at a couple of things that you can do that are not hard, they’re certainly not expensive. As a matter of fact, almost all of these things are free.
And the first one starts off with surrounding yourself with friends and family who will encourage you and inspire you. Limit your time with, you know, the toxic people.
Next, spend some time outdoors or in nature as much as possible. If you live in New York or another major city, go for a walk every day. Seeing some people, fresh air, sunshine, and being outside, helps you feel better.
Exercise, move your body. It doesn’t have to be a big dramatic motion. It can just be something as simple as moving to music. In my town, on Friday nights, there’s a drum circle. It’s in an open area, people show up. And you can see people of all ages, teens through 90s I saw who were moving to the music. It helps you feel better. And if you’re inspired, sing! Express yourself, reveal your voice. And that reminds me of listening to uplifting music. Great music that you enjoy. I don’t care about your husband, wife, partner, whomever– your kids certainly not. But listen to music that you enjoy.
Join a job seekers support group and share what’s going on with you, and your struggles. Get some empathy. Get some advice. I know I’ve got JobSearch.Community. It’s designed for that plus a lot more.
Prioritize your self-care. Eating well. Exercise, m. Massage from time to time. Baths, taking care of your body supports your mental health. And of course, you have to do certain work toward getting a job. But most people overcompensate and they just sit at their desks all day, trying to find job leads and agonizing. Doing these things is going to help you land your next role.
