How Do You Know You Should Change Careers?

Changing careers can be both exciting and challenging. Understanding the points I’m going to make here is going to help you navigate the process more effectively, and increase your chances of success. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search advice and coaching globally, changing careersbecause I make the process so much easier for people related to their search, related to a career transition, and much more.

So I’m going to talk with you about a couple of different points that you’re going to navigate in the course of the search and following through on these is going to make it so much easier. And the first one is the importance of research. Research. Research. Before diving headfirst into a new career. spend enough time researching the industry, the job market trends, the skills and qualifications needed for the specific role that you’re interested in. Speak to multiple people who are doing what you’re thinking of doing to ask them questions about the reality of the work, rather than making a decision based upon the fantasy of what you think it’s like. I’ve got a video course about informational interviews. It’s going to help you with the process of asking questions and what you should be asking about. So you can find that at TheBigGameHunter.us/course. Understanding the reality of the desired field is going to help you make an informed decision, develop a realistic plan for transitioning successfully and minimize the risk of making this transition.

Number two. It’s okay to start small. Many career changers feel the need to immediately jump into their dream job at the same level they were in their previous career. But you know what? Starting small can actually be a smart move. Embrace entry-level positions or internships to gain relevant experience and gradually work your way up. It’s all about building a solid foundation. Try doing something on the side or start a side hustle in order to experiment with a new career.

Number three. Transferable skills are your secret weapon. Don’t underestimate the power of transferable skills, even if you’re shifting industries, there are likely to skills from your previous career that can be applied to your new one. Highlight these transferable skills on your resume, and during interviews to demonstrate your value and adaptability.

Number four, networking is going to be pivotal for you. Building connections in your desired field is crucial when changing careers. Go to industry events and talk to people. Join professional associations and talk to people. Use LinkedIn to connect with professionals working in your target industry or company and talk to people. Networking can open doors, give you insights and even lead to job opportunities that might not be advertised publicly.

Number five. Embrace continuous learning. Changing careers often means acquiring new knowledge and skills. Be open to continuous learning opportunities such as online courses, workshops, certifications, or even going back to school if necessary in order to make this change. Demonstrating a commitment to learning and growth is going to make you more attractive to potential employers.

But ultimately, it’s important to stay confident, remain persistent and keep an open mind. I hope you found this helpful. I’m Jeff Altman. My website is TheBigGameHunter.us. Go to the blog, there’s gonna be a lot there to help you.
