This article has some helpful tips to help you negotiate your salary with your employer without looking needy or greedy. Those who don’t negotiate salary leave a  lot of bargaining power on the table. Structure your salary negotiations around the value you bring to your position and the company and avoid mentioning your needs or feeling that you deserve what you want. Finding a balance between “firm” and “flexible” – avoiding entering into salary negotiations that refuse to yield and say no to a minimum pay rise. Make it clear that you know the difference between what we discussed above and what they are willing to pay you. Don’t go into your salary negotiations with the mentality, “I will refuse to give in.” After all, that’s not negotiating. It’s an ultimatum.    

Always look for alternatives to situations where the employer tells you that they won’t increase the salary offer. If you have received a job offer and are not satisfied with the salary, or are afraid or uncomfortable to speak with them over the phone (or in-person) you can write a salary negotiation letter. This is a good time to impress your employer during the interview and sign a contract.

If you are currently in a position that you enjoy, you can take many of these salary negotiation tips and use them to demand an increase at your current job. Negotiations on the job offer are not only about salary, but also about the demand for more work – including the reconciliation of family and work.

Bear in mind is that this is not about creating a pay negotiation script, but about you, your potential employer, power, flexibility and your future relationship.
