10 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Applying for Jobs
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
These are common mistakes people make when applying for a job.
Mistake #1: Not Customizing Your Resume
One of the most common mistakes people make when applying for jobs is not customizing their resume. Your resume should be tailored to each job listing, highlighting the skills and experience most relevant to that role. Sending the same generic resume over and over again is like a broken watch that’s right twice a day. It may be right sometimes, but it’s missing a lot. Take the time to customize your resume for each application.
Mistake #2: Sending a Generic Cover Letter
Sending a generic cover letter, like a form letter, is another mistake to avoid. Instead, highlight why you’re a great fit for that specific company and position. Generic form letters don’t cut it. Show the employer that you’ve done your research and understand their needs.
Mistake #3: Spelling and Grammar Mistakes
Spelling and grammar mistakes in your resume are unacceptable. There’s no reason for this, as most word processors have built-in software for checking spelling and grammar. Take the time to proofread your resume carefully. If you’re not satisfied with the built-in tools, consider using external software like Grammarly.
Mistake #4: Applying without the Required Credentials
Before applying for a job, make sure your resume demonstrates a fit for the role. Applying without the required credentials will likely result in rejection. Take the time to evaluate your qualifications and only apply for positions where you meet the necessary requirements.
Mistake #5: Submitting Incomplete Applications
Read the instructions carefully before submitting your application. Sometimes there are specific requirements or requested information that you need to provide. Failing to include all the requested materials may lead to rejection. Pay attention to detail and follow the application instructions closely.
Mistake #6: Using an Unprofessional Email Address
When applying for jobs, make sure to use a professional email address. Using an unprofessional email address can create a negative impression. Set up a separate email address for job applications that includes your name or initials.
Mistake #7: Not Including Your City, State, and Zip Code
It’s important to include your city, state, and zip code on your resume. Without your zip code, employers may have difficulty locating you in their systems. Many companies narrow their search by zip code, so including this information increases your chances of being found by the right employers.
Mistake #8: Rushing the Application Process
Take the time to submit a great resume and application. Rushing through the process without giving it proper thought can result in rejection. Set aside dedicated time to review and tailor your application materials to each position you apply for.
Mistake #9: Not Following Up
After applying for a job, it’s important to follow up. Send a polite email or make a phone call a day or so later to confirm that the employer has received and reviewed your resume. This demonstrates your interest and enthusiasm for the position. Be prepared to leave a voicemail with your name, the date you submitted your resume, and why you believe you’re a good fit for the role.
Mistake #10: Giving Up Too Soon
Don’t let initial rejections discourage you. Persistence is key when job hunting. Keep applying and stay positive. Remember that finding the right job takes time and effort. Stay motivated and don’t give up too soon.
Avoiding these common mistakes will increase your chances of finding your next job. Take the time to customize your application materials, follow the instructions, and demonstrate your qualifications. Persistence and a positive attitude will pay off in the end.
