Here’s a story that teaches the lesson of creativity when dealing with someone who is going to try and cheat in a situation.
You Don’t Always Need to Confront Someone | Career Angles
You don't always need to confront something in order to get your way. There's a wonderful old story about a businessman who loans money to a loan shark. And he doesn't have the money to pay him back. So the loan shark comes up with a proposal. And the loan shark, ugly, gruesome mob guy, says to the businessman, "I'll wipe the debt clean if I can marry your daughter," which the businessman is not real thrilled with. So they negotiate and they come up with another way.
And that is, the loan shark will put two pebbles into a bag, one white, one black. if the daughter will reach into the bag and pull out the black pebble, the debt will be wiped clean, and the loan shark will marry the daughter. However, if the white pebble is pulled out, the debt will get wiped out and everyone's all good. She doesn't have to get married. So the loan shark reaches down to the ground, and takes two black pebbles and puts it into the bag and the daughter sees this. And the question is, what do you do? Do you confront the guy? Do you refuse to play along? Like what do you do?
And she came up with another answer that showed really creative thinking. What she did was reach into the bag where there are two black pebbles, so she's doomed if she exposes it. And as she pulls out, the first pebble, she drops it into the ground, where all sorts of pebbles there. And she says, "Well, it was a black pebble. But if you reach down below, I'm sorry, It's a white pebble. But if you reach it below, you'll see that what is left is a black pebble. So obviously this one was white." And of course, the loan shark doesn't want to be exposed as being a cheater. So Dad's off the hook.
Not every problem has to be taken on directly. Sometimes you can come up with a creative solution to solve the issue.
I like that story. It's a really good story.
I'm glad you did.
