Why do companies take so long to hire when they know they risk losing good candidates?

Gen-AI: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m a coach who helps people with their job search, hiring managing and leading being more effective in the workplace in general. Why do companies take so long to hire when they know they risk losing good candidates?”

Well, here’s a couple of scenarios. Number one is they’re not sure that you are that good. Can you believe it?  You are, so that’s always number one in the scenario and what they want to do is make comparisons with other people before making a decision. They’re afraid to make the wrong choice because frankly they don’t know what they’re doing. If you look at the interview process, what happens in doing this entire process number one is they have to deduce what it is they’re really looking for and they’re too lazy to really do it.

You may have a job description but most of the time the job description is pulled out of a database of job descriptions that they’ve accumulated over the years that hasn’t been edited. Number two is they don’t really know how to interview. You know they ask this stupid question, “Tell me about yourself,” and they start asking ad hoc questions to follow up with that Instead of structuring their process. They don’t really determine how important these attributes are and, worst of all, everyone’s lying in this process. You know, you are, shall we say enhancing your ability to do the job. They are enhancing the value of the job. If you’re working with a recruiter who’s contingency, in particular, most the time they’re so anxious to get the commission they will say and do almost anything to get you to take the job. So recognize the process is faulty.

Now why they don’t pull the trigger and make the decision to hire? They’re afraid of making a mistake and they’re not absolutely sure that they’ve asked enough in order to determine whether you’re really qualified. This is really where it comes to.  It’s like the comparison shopping process. It’s like you could go to work a car deal or buy a car, right? But you shop at different ones. You go to a store to buy (I’m gonna pick something simple) underwear or lingerie as the case might be. Any would do the job but you decide I want this one or that one for what ever the reason. They kind of view you as underwear or lingerie and, as such, they do comparison shopping. The result winds up being they’re afraid to make the decision and it takes too long and frankly they don’t care if they lose good candidates. That’s because there are others right behind you
