Why Communication is the Key to Career Success

Why Communication is the Key to Career Success

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Have you ever experienced the frustration of seeing less experienced colleagues getting promoted ahead of you? It can be disheartening and seem unfair. But the truth is, there is a reason why these colleagues are advancing in their careers at a faster rate, and it has to do with the three levels of value: implementation, unification, and communication.

Level 1: Implementation

The first level of value is implementation. As an implementer, you are known for being reliable, disciplined, and focused. You excel at your work and are highly skilled in your field. Companies hire you for your technical knowledge and expertise, expecting you to be diligent and efficient. While implementers are crucial in moving things forward and getting things done, this level of value is the lowest in the marketplace. As an implementer, you may find yourself stuck, feeling unnoticed and lacking visibility.

Level 2: Unification

The second level of value is unification. At this level, you transition from being the doer to a manager. Instead of doing the work yourself, you oversee people, processes, and projects. As a manager, you utilize your management skills to ensure that tasks are completed effectively and efficiently. Unification is a higher level of value in the marketplace, and it often comes with a higher income and more impact. However, many managers still feel undervalued and unappreciated, believing they need more education or to work harder to prove themselves.

Level 3: Communication

The highest level of value is communication. Being a great communicator means effectively and confidently expressing your thoughts, ideas, and leadership skills. Individuals who excel in communication are often promoted and recognized, even if they have less education or experience than their colleagues. This may seem unfair, as we were taught that education and expertise are the keys to success. However, the marketplace values communication above all else. Effective communication allows individuals to articulate their thoughts clearly, demonstrate charisma, and become the preferred choice for opportunities.

The Importance of Communication in Career Advancement

If you have ever wondered why less experienced colleagues are advancing faster than you, the answer lies in their communication skills. While it may not seem fair, understanding the importance of communication can help you take your career to the next level. By focusing on improving your communication skills, you can position yourself as a leader in the marketplace and attract opportunities.

Developing Effective Communication Skills

If you are serious about developing your communication skills and advancing in your career, consider working with an executive coach. Executive coaching programs can provide you with the necessary training and guidance to enhance your communication abilities. Effective communication involves positioning yourself in the marketplace, communicating authentically, and mastering the skills of a great orator.
