One of the classic ways that children torture adults is by asking the question, “Why?”
“You need to take a nap.”
“Why?”
“Because you’ll feel better after a nap.”
“Why?”
You get the idea.
The simple question, “Why,” causes people to run into the fact that they haven’t really thought about something in a deep way. They do something because they been told to do it or have been programmed to believe it, rather than having thought about it and actually chosen to do it.
Every once in a while, try asking the question, “why do we do it that way,” and see whether anyone has thought about this behavior or policy in a long time.
You can quickly become a change agent with that simple question.
