Watch any restaurant rescue show on TV, when they get to the menu, the question is, “What are you known for? What do you do better than anyone else in your area?”
Most of them are just like any other place except for one thing– they don’t even do it as well as the other places.
Many of you may be that way, as well. You do good enough work to get by but not enough to be noticed for doing good work.
Your work is like everyone else and you wonder why you are not chosen for new and better opportunities as well as promotions.
I’m told that there is a metaphor in Australia about tall poppies. And when a puppy starts to stand out from all the others in the field, what happens is someone cuts the head of the poppy off so is of uniform height with all the others.
In the US, most organizations have cultural criticism of people who try too hard.
“You’re going to make us look bad.”
“They’re a brown nose.”
Often, ostracism takes place.
If you’ve read me for any amount of time, you know I believe that good enough isn’t (good enough).
If you want different results from all the others, you have to provide different results AND make sure that those in authority know that you doing that.
After all, there is that other metaphor about if a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound.
If you do good work and no one authority knows about it, you may feel personal satisfaction and that’s great! But if you’re like most workers, eventually you’ll grow to resent the fact that you don’t receive the attention, rewards and benefits you believe you deserve.
Again, provide different results AND make sure others know about it who are in positions of authority.
