Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, the head coach for and the admin for the Career Angles group on Facebook. I want to talk with you about using LinkedIn a little bit differently than you tend to think about because, well, let me just speak from the perspective of . . . I was LinkedIn number 7653, of the 600+ million people on the platform now. The way the platform was originally intended, was to stay in contact with your network and ask people for advice.
Now, most of the advice that people asked for these days is around job hunting, how to network into an organization, do you know someone who . . .
Well, I want you to think of that, "Do know someone who . . . "a little bit differently. Let me explain.
You want some advice on the situation. Let's say your systems developer. You're not quite sure how to do something. Why don't we chat to someone on LinkedIn is doing exactly that and ask them for some advice. You're a Program Manager and you have a couple of different choices. Yes, you've got an internal mentor. Why not reach outside the organization? Talk to someone who's done something similar.
LinkedIn is a platform and is a place where you can connect and network with people and ask for advice. Are people going to respond instantly? No, we know that, already. But is it a place where you can get some input, different than what you might hear internally? You bet it is. But you have to use it that way.
You also have to be open to people reaching out to you in order to ask you for advice. I'll simply say, be smart about this and don't just think of LinkedIn as a tool for when you're looking for work. Think of it as a place where, regularly, you can be more effective at work if you reach out to people, ask for some advice, help them as a way of reciprocating and just thinking of it for your career and not just simply for changing jobs.
