Here's a new interview question. What's your COVID story? I'm Jeff Altman,The Big Game Hunter, I'm a career and leadership coach. And this is how I would approach it. Now, if you're a manager, if you're a leader in an organization, you talk about the early days briefly. "Obviously, organizationally, in 2020, there were a lot of challenges. Everyone was freaking out. And rightly so. My job at that point was to bring people together and talk about what it was that was going on for them. We did zoom calls, we did a lot of stuff to keep people together. And then we slowly started to shift and focus on what we could do in these particular times to accomplish our goals. And to generate revenue if you're in sales, yada, yada, yada." If you're a staff person, the story begins off with "Wow! March 2020." And for both of you, no one wants to hear you whining, or go into a lengthy sob story. If you lost someone, or people in your family, acknowledge it. "And we had a lot of loss in our family." One sentence. That's it. "We grieved. We had difficulty. And here we are six months later, a year later. . . " And this part now exists for for everyone. "And we ask ourselves the question, 'what's possible now? What can we do now given the roller coaster nature of COVID? We were originally supposed to be back in the office now. There's questions about it. We focus on what's possible now? How do we accomplish our goals? How do we do our sales?" Whatever it is, you eventually get people to that question-- "what's possible now," that allows everyone to see that you're success oriented and you're not a follower. Follow me. I'm Jeff Altman.
