The Thrill Is Gone

Inspired by the BB King song, I talk about how to recognize the danger signs that the thrill is gone

Tell Me About a Mistake You Made

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’ve been coaching people and helping organizations hire staff for more than 40 years now. This is a video was inspired by the old BB King song, I’m going to spare you my singing, I don’t have the high register I once did.

But there’s a day that you wake up. and you notice that the thrill is gone about finding work. Actually, the thrill is gone about doing your work. You’re coming into the office, and you notice that it’s a job, a J O B, with all the bad connotations to it.

And you feel like dead. There’s a dead feeling within you. And you notice that you haven’t had fun, not just simply in your work life, but in your personal life for a long time. Where did the thrill go? Where did the enjoyment go after all this time. How did it go away?

Well, “The how,” to me, is less important than you start playing the big game of life a lot better, and start to have fun again. Yeah, fun, basically, can involve immersion in your environment, and taking the risks associated with it. And, frankly, if you don’t think that this is an environment where that will work, you need to leave to get back that joy and the heart space again, because, otherwise, all you’re doing is going through this mundane existence.

You see, management should be creating an atmosphere where they seem to care about people, where there’s fun amongst the staff, where there’s the feeling of working with friends. But, at the same time, there’s the belief that everyone is working toward a common purpose. There’s meaning in the work. And, yes, the firm is making money, where people have pride in their organization, and they feel like they’re being treated fairly.

You know, for me, I worked at one agency, where the owner was absolutely bizarre. And, you know, everyone basically kept their heads down in fear that one day he would have the tantrum and be invited into his office to be fired. It happened all the time. It was bizarre, and it just propels a culture of fear that you don’t need in order to feel like you have the autonomy to do the job.

You want to feel like, at the end of the day, you get praised, fairly compensated and find meaning and receive support from management. There’s no reason to tolerate it in this life; you can change it. That feeling that you have been dead is not normal. And, if it is for everyone in your circle, it’s a mistake to be in that circle. You need to go to places where people have the love of what they do, and the thrill of life and that will help inspire you, and you will inspire others.
