There Are Stories And Then There Are Stories!

Today we’re going to talk about the seventh deadly sin of interviewing and that is the sin of not having basic questions prepared to ask about the job and their expectations of you. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search advice and coaching globally, because I make things so much easier for people.

Now, let me just start off with a quick story. I once had a client who took a position where he inherited a project from someone who left and this person had spent 80% of the budget, yet delivered only 20% of the work. Catch that. 80% of the money was spent. Only 20% of the work was done, and no one volunteered the truth to him and he didn’t ask anything that would indicate that there was a problem. He would have been the fall guy for the project had I not gotten the math first.

Always try to ask clarifying questions about things that seem incongruent to you. Ask about their expectations for you for the first 30, 60 90 days, and after a year. Ask about resources that will be available to you. And if you’re a manager or in senior leadership role, what the caliber of the staff is that you’ll be inheriting. Make sure you have the authority to replace people who fail to perform. If something seems impossible to do within the timeline afforded to you, unless you’re desperate to return to work, don’t accept the offer. And if you are desperate to return to work, keep looking once you’re on board for at least 45 days, just to make sure that you don’t wind up getting hurt in the course of doing this job.
