Many older job hunters develop bad habits that sabotage their job search. Here, I remind you of something you should never forget.

Summary

I hadn't done something related to the older worker in a while. Those of you who are over 50, those of you who are over 60, who believe you're running into ageism as part of your search, and I'm tough on you, folks, because many of you . . . and I speak from the experience, not just simply as a coach, but the experience of 40 years doing executive search.

I speak from the perspective that many of you don't put the same effort into your job search now as you did when you were less experienced, when you were younger, and, thus, you don't perform as well on your interviews and blame it on the younger hiring manager when a lot of it's on you . . . but that's not really the focus of what I want to cover in this video.

What I want to remind you is that one of the habits that many of us get into (and I'm a contemporary, in case you haven't noticed the white in my beard), many of the habits that we get into when we are older is we'd stop pushing ourselves and we make convenient excuses for our difficulties.

Now, again, I'm not saying that ageism doesn't exist, but it may not exist to the same degree is you may think it does and that there are a lot of people in a lot of organizations that are very happy to take on an older worker. After all, they are not going to have to pay your retirement. You can work with them for a couple of years and then you're gone. That's okay. Because they've already been learning that no one stays for that 10-15 years. So, what many people tend to forget is they have developed the habit of making excuses for poor performance and they have the habit of quitting. They have the habit of giving up.

Now, we develop it in lots of ways. We develop it through how we manage our diet. We develop the habit by the way we dress and that we don't dress as well as we once did. We developed a habit in many many different ways. You may not be exercising and that's another poor habit that you've gotten into that impacts your performance because it gives you the habit of the convenient excuse for poor performance.

My reminder to you his just because five firms may have said, "No," doesn't mean that other firms won't say, "Yes." You just need one. There's a lot of articles that I see on the web that are actually awful that basically accept defeat as being, "it's okay. You can get this gig at the organization that no one's ever heard of before and work part time." And, if that's really what you want, you should do that and that's what you need to do in order to buy time for the real job that you want you should do that. But the notion of settling for less, get that out of your system. Fight for what you want.

You know, I was talking to a group yesterday and referred to an old movie that you may or may not remember call "The Dirty Dozen," and, in it, there's a scene where one of the characters, part of his training is trying to do a rope climb. He gets about three quarters of the way up and starts saying, "I can't do it, I can't do it." Then one of the actors comes over with a machine gun and starts firing it at the rope, basically cutting it down from underneath him and scaring the bejesus out of somebody makes it to the ceiling. And lo and behold, he's able to do it.

Well, a lot of you can do more than you think you're able to. And I want to encourage you stop thinking and stop having the habit of giving up and quitting. Stop having the habit of excuses. Now, I'm not saying you shouldn't learn from your experiences and the mistakes that you make. Many of you go to interviews and you're not really as well prepared as you think you are. You don't take the time to connect with a younger hiring manager, male or female, with the result being . . . You know, part of what a firm hires for is your ability to connect with people, the ability to develop trust. You act like you can recite a bunch of facts and get hired. I don't care what your age is and where you live in the country. That doesn't work. Because there's a lot of very capable people out there and you're not giving them a reason to choose you.

Why should they choose you? That's the thing to remember. Why are you the one who's world class who can solve their problem. Remember that as you interview. Remember that you want this. Don't do it halfway, as many of you do, in order to cushion the expectation of failure. Go all in! Go all out. Try hard, prepare hard. Drill yourself and have other people drill you hard. You may not get the next one or two or the one after that or the one after that. It may take the fifth or the seventh one but do you really want to take one of these "less than" jobs? No. If you do it, again, that's okay. That's your choice. But a lot of you that I talked to don't. You want to have a job that really fits you.

Keep plugging, keep grinding. I was watching Kobe Bryant tonight as part of his visit to the University of Alabama. He talked to the football team and he's talking about all the effort that goes into being a champion and the grind that you do in order to become a champion.

It's not that they just arrived with talent. Talent is a part of it. But a lot of people have talent in sports and entertainment and they never achieve. Sometimes, it's the brakes. Sometimes, it's bad luck. Sometimes, it's being in the only the wrong place at the wrong time and they can't win.

But they're not grinding it out. They're not doing the little things that make the winner. Remember that. Don't forget it, Push yourself.

You Are Missing Different Groups in Your Recruiting | No BS Hiring Advice

Summary

I'm going to talk with those of you who are involved with hiring. And I'll start by saying, I worked in search for more than 40 years, and filled more than 1200 full time positions, plus consulting assignments. I now coach people, so I'm not you're trying to sell you recruiting business. What I'm here to do is to offer some very simple advice in a no BS kind of way because your hiring managers are screwing themselves out of their ignorance and their bigotry. So, there are a number of different groups that could be interviewed and could be hired and do great work for you.
I'll start off with the one group that, time and again, delivers results but for many of your managers, they're worried about nonsense. That group is older workers --seniors, individuals who are close to retirement age, whatever that means these days. They are generally older than the hiring manager and the story they tell themselves is that these people will not take direction, they're burned out tired has-beens. That's a simple way of putting it, right?
And it's a lie that they're telling themselves and you and HR needs to confront it because you're staring at productivity issues. You're staring at them, complaining that they're not seeing enough people and demographics are such that they can take 22 year olds from Gen Z who have no experience. They can do that. Their work ethic is very similar to the older generation.
I'll simply say that, you know, the studies that I've been seeing point to Gen Z as being like a clone of the Baby Boomers in terms of their work ethic. So what's the issue with the Boomers? if you're liking Gen Z, the Boomers actually have experience, they will take direction and they'll work hard. They're not rushing out to retirement because they can't afford it. So, that's one group that you're hiring managers should pay attention to.
Another one, for certain types of positions, are ex-offenders. You know, people who've been incarcerated. Now ex-offenders, as long as they're involved with social services, as well, will work very hard, do a lot of good work. They need certain types of training, and then they need certain types of supports in your organization. But it's a population that gets ignored and often can do jobs that you really need people to do because these are not people who've been trained for accounting and finance or technology. They are labor for a lot of your organizations. Don't neglect ex-offenders, even if you have to pay to train them because once they've trained, they will be loyal.
The third group is moms who are returning from maternity or raising kids, for that matter. This is a workforce that wants to work, has decided that they're ready to work and there are a lot of jobs that they can do and, as an HR professional, you need to fill jobs, right? And your hiring managers want very simple behaviors out of people. What's the cost of training to get someone up to speed on things that they did before? Not all that expensive believe it or not.
I don't care what field this person worked in. They can do the job with a certain amount of training. You can also, if you're paying for training, get them to commit to work for your organization for a certain period of time or be obligated to pay the firm back for that training. It's not difficult. Just don't go crazy with . . . "You have to work for us for three years or else you will have to pay us back."
Nonsense. Absolute nonsense. Don't do that kind of crap. Just amortize it out over the course of a year. If they leave the within the year. They owe you the money back.
