EP 1403 Here I answer the question from someone who is asked for references by recruiter during the 1st interview and doesn’t want to provide them.

Summary

I was asked the question I thought was great, "A recruiter has asked me for references at the time of the 1st interview. I don't really want to give it to them. How can I say no to a recruiter if they asked me for references during an interview?"

I want to start off by differentiating and start by answering the question about a contingency recruiters. That's definitely a place to say no. They may tell you that they want to check references on behalf of their clients. That's a great line. But what they are really doing is trying to use your contacts to recruit other people. I know this because I listen to sales trainers for years talk about this is a great gambit to get talent and you don't want to be complicit.

The easiest way to respond is to smile and say, "In due time but not right now."

If you respond by saying, "We need to have it because the client wants us to check references at the time that we submit a cabinet," (I want to be clear, not talking about retained search firm's or C suite professionals) I am answering in this way for the Average Jane or Joe who is approached by a recruiter and is being told that the client wants it.

"Great! I'll be happy to provide my references to the client."

"They want us to check the references."

"Not at this time."

"Then we can submit you."

"OK."

Leave it at that. You know why? It's because if they can get you in the door they'll get you in the door.

And they can't. What they're trying to do is parlay one contact into 2 or 3 were they call them up and trying to recruit them, extensively under the guise of checking a reference.

So, they might say, "We need a former manager, it was start by contacting your manager in doing a reference check and then flip it in an effort to get recruiting business from them.

Or they may try to talk to a peer reviewers and then say, "Say! This is a position I am trying to recruit for. Is this something that might interest you? There are a lot of little gambits that go on with third-party recruiters.

I know there are a lot of people who might respond by saying, "Would you do that with a company?"

"NO!" Unfortunately, too many third-party recruiters or sleazy. We know this already. The idea is to push them off because you don't know if you can trust them yet (wink wink. Probably you can trust many of them anyway. There are exceptions, but most of them you probably can't.) And it's kind of like being on a 1st date with someone.

"Can I get a reference from your former husband or wife, please. I would like to get a reference from them. Maybe someone else you went out with previously because I want to know what you are liked by talking to them."

No, not on a 1st date, especially with an absolute stranger. Obviously, you would never do that in a dating situation! Here, I want you to do this very casually and with a big smile on your face, say, "In due time , we'll get that."

"But the client wants it!"

"If you can't present me with out that, obviously you don't think I am a fit. So let's leave it at that and just move on."

Summary

I was asked the question:

Can I get away with using the fake reference?
I'm not going to give you the morality speech.  I will simply say that it is absolutely wrong and it is possible to get away with it, but harder than you think it is.

It's possible to get away with it. If your "reference" has been properly briefed, speaks with confidence, understands the field of work that you are in, can talk in detail, not just simply about the simple work that you've done, but about the more nuanced work that you did for your organization.  Most people can't pull that off.

This is 1 of the ways that people get caught.  These days there is LinkedIn.  Someone says that they work for your firm and they don't work there.  Lo and behold, you are exposed as a liar.

They can't speak in detail about you – – what you did and how you went about doing it. Any follow-up question other than name, rank, and serial number questions receives very thin answers and lo and behold, you are a liar.

Is that how you want to lose an opportunity? By faking it?

Let me also going one extra layer. If you have to think the reference to get the job, you're probably not qualified to do the job will probably be fired.

Do you want to put all your blood and guts into getting a job and then, because you're not really qualified, get fired?

Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? No.

A quick story. In days of old, someone told me about how they went so far as to send someone in for their medical exam before they were hired! When it came time to do the drug test, because the real person look different and had a different handwriting than the person who is actually taking the test for them, they put a splint on the hand of this person. They got away with it, except when the person was on board, the person was fired for drug use.

Invariably, the chickens come home to roost.  You really don't want to do this but recognize, if you do, you are putting your career at risk yet again.  There is something you are not qualified for in this job and need to have a liar life for you.

Don't do it.

EP 1204 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter Explains exactly when to contact your references and how to coach them into a great reference for you.

Summary

I want to talk with you today about preparing your references. Most people prepare their references around the time they are getting the job offer which is really too late. You are going to be feeling a certain amount of stress. You are going to have to suddenly scramble to find these folks. You may unintentionally offer up some names and contact information for people who are not necessarily your biggest fans.

So, I want to start by saying, first of all, if you going to provide someone as a reference, talk with them at the beginning of your job search, not at the critical juncture where you have to provide a reference. Be prepared with their current organization, their job title, phone number and email address.

Talk with them about how they should describe your work. Find out the positives. Find out about some of the critical things they might say, not because you want to eradicate them, but you consider it useful information for you to have. Many organizations are going to ask about weaknesses; you might as well find out directly from one of your references what they might say. If they say something extremely critical, extremely destructive, well, frankly, it's better to know about at the beginning of your search than when you need to provide a reference, right?

So, find out at the beginning of the search what these folks will say about you. Provide contact information. When you get down to the point where you actually providing them with their name and contact information as a reference, let them know who's in a probably going to be calling, whether it's going to be someone from the firm, a recruiter like me (I no longer do recruiting) because, sometimes, my clients ask me to do the reference checks for them, whether it might be an outside service checking the reference.

Confirm dates. Confirm what they'll say about your dates, your title, things along those lines with them as you did at the beginning of the interview. Here is the critical thing – – talk with them about some of the things that you said in the interview, some of the themes that you've offered up to describe your work.

For example, if you are on a project that was considered a critical project and delivered it two weeks early, you might be able to tell the potential employer that this person's going to be very able talk about how you are able to deliver a project early that no one else was getting anywhere near delivering at all – – you get the idea. Maybe not that example, but what the special characteristics are that this person might be able to talk about.

It's not that your references are going to guarantee that you get more money but they certainly can guarantee that you don't get hired or that the offer is a neutral offer. After all, if someone says, “He was okay,” in that tone of voice, well, there’s a message that and employer hears in that. They don't know that that person might be in the middle a meeting is trying to be helpful and is distracted by five people in their office. They just know, “Well, he was okay.”

You don’t want references ever given like that. You might just simply see if you can schedule a date and time for them to talk, things along those lines that preclude those sorts of issues.

So, again, in summary, establish your references at the beginning of your job search and not at the end. Find out what people will say about you pro and con. Make sure that you alert people to the prospect of getting a call at around the time that you expect they will be getting phone calls and who those calls might be from. Lastly, make sure you let them know some of the themes that you’ve talked about in your interviews so they can be consistent and tell stories related to some of those themes.

Summary

Today, we’re talking about reference letters. Many of you have the attitude that what you need to do before you start your job search is collect these letters of reference from former managers, people who know you, all these wonderful testimonials about who you are and what you’ve done.

And I want to be clear that there is a difference between a reference letter and references.

References are what a firm is going to be checking when they are ready to hire you. Reference letters are these things that, often, amateurs or beginners think they're supposed to collect to present with their resume. Frankly, no one reads reference letters. Everyone knows that they are baloney.

Don’t get me wrong but references are, too, but reference letters rarely deal with specific issues that employer might have.

When you get to references, you want to make sure that the former manager is able to speak clearly about who you are, what you did for them and that it is consistent with the stories that you told the hiring manager at the firm that you are interviewing with.

They want accuracy about dates, compensation, what you did and how you went about doing that, whether you are eligible for rehire, that they love to work with you again, what your successes were, what your real competencies work… these sort of things are important to the next firm. A reference letter, to them in most cases, is garbage.

So, line up your references. Don't asked them for reference letters. Let them know that you will be in touch with them right before they get a phone call about checking references to give them a heads up and to give them a sense of what to expect in the course of the reference check.

EP 1166 Should you . . . or not. Jeff Answers for you and explains why?

Summary

So, this was about references. When I get references from people, when I talk with people, sometimes, they make the mistake of putting their references on their resume or providing a separate list of references. And to recruiters, this is true of both agency and corporate recruiters, those references are like “red meat” to them. Let me explain why.

When you provide a reference, agency AND corporate recruiters are often thinking of this as someone they should network with and maybe recruit for our jobs. So, they start getting distracted when they start noticing that, “Hey! One of these references fits this job I have!” Then, they call them up and segue the reference check into another candidate. So, you get lost in the shuffle while they start fixating on the other person.

Sometimes, people also make the mistake of not clearing with their references that it's okay to provide them and they just stick them on the resume. That puts your current manager in a bind when they get a call out of the blue. They now know you are looking for a job and will be out of the organization. So, they have to start looking for a replacement for you because you've already signaled them that you are going to be leaving.

With agency and corporate recruiters calling references, even if you have some admonition not to call until we get to offer stage or whatever that you have there, recruiters still do it anyway.

Maybe, they don't wind up doing it by saying, “I am going to check a reference on Ramesh or Jane,” but they call up and they say, “I’m doing a search for a client and heard some nice things about your work want to talk with you.” Again, you're lost in the shuffle while they get focused on this an individual.

Also, I want to mention that when you get to the point of an offer, and you believe references are going to be checked, you want to get an idea of what they are going to say and how they are going to say it. Tell them not to get all sorts of confessional about imperfections in you background. You are not perfect and neither are they. So, tell them to give you great rankings so that they do “the 1 to 10 scale,” you want them to say “10” which I don't want anyone to really say, I want them to say, “9+.” In this way, it doesn't look like they are a rigged reference. It looks like they really hold you in high regard.

“Why would you write that person a 9+ and not a 10,”

“10 is perfect to me. This individual isn't perfect. They’ve got a couple of imperfections; everyone does. I don’t want to fixate on the imperfections but, like everyone, they sometimes a mistake. So, I give them a 9+ plus because their work is extraordinary.”

Isn’t that a great way to respond?

So, this was about references. When I get references from people, when I talk with people, sometimes, they make the mistake of putting their references on their resume or providing a separate list of references. And to recruiters, this is true of both agency and corporate recruiters, those references are like “red meat” to them. Let me explain why.

When you provide a reference, agency AND corporate recruiters are often thinking of this as someone they should network with and maybe recruit for our jobs. So, they start getting distracted when they start noticing that, “Hey! One of these references fits this job I have!” Then, they call them up and segue the reference check into another candidate. So, you get lost in the shuffle while they start fixating on the other person.

EP 1092 The original question (which I share) was actually the wrong question.  Here answer the right question and try to help someone take action.

Summary

The original question I received is, "If you've lost touch with employers and past references, is there still hope for you as a job seeker?"

As you can see, I changed the question to, "What do I do if I lost contact with past employers and references?"

However, what is most revealing is the actual question.

"All is lost."

"I am doomed."

Stop it. Seriously, stop it. You've got a brain. Pause for a second and say, "if I were to try and find my best friend who I haven't spoken with in 5 years, what what I do?" The answer is you would look for them on Facebook. You would look for them on LinkedIn. You will go online. Why is this any different?

The fact of the matter is that it isn't any different. In order to reestablish contact with people that you haven't been in contact with for a while, you start by asking yourself, "Where did they tell me they lived, again?" Then you would do a Google search.

"Where did we work together?" Then he went to a LinkedIn search and look for them by name and "Current or Past Employers," and obviously this would be a past employer. You can always do a Facebook search and see if you can connect with them and then drop them a quick note and say, "I'm so sorry that I have been out of the loop for a while. I wanted to reach back out to you. Do you have a few minutes to speak? How can I get a hold of you?"

Just make the contact!. You may feel uncomfortable doing it. Get over it! They are human being who may need you at some point, right?

Be flexible. Be friendly. Acknowledge that you would like to do it differently in the future. Reach out to them using online tools. You will find them. It's not that hard.

Checking References That Were Not Provided | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

EP 1051 Is it normal / ethical for a potential employer to contact my ex-coworkers to ask about my work even though they are not the references that I had provided?

Summary

This is a question I received about checking references that were not provided.

"Is it normal and ethical for an employer to check the reference with my ex-coworkers, even though they are not the references I provided?"

Understand, most employers know that the reference you gave them is "canned."  If you give them a bad one, you are a moron.  They or assuming you are not a moron so they want to get something real.  So who should they call?  They might call someone they already know who works in the organization to check your reference.

For example, there was this 1 consulting firm that I did work with for years.  They did business development and consulting work with organizations worldwide for many years.  If this was affirmed. There was no longer client and they were interviewing someone from this firm, they might contact someone that they already knew and ask if they knew the person and what they thought.

If they heard something critical or something. He gave them, "cause for pause," they might dig a little deeper before hiring the person. If they heard something positive, that was the reference and they brought someone on board. This was someone that they knew and trusted.

If they are doing what is nicknamed, "secondary sourcing (asking your reference. If there is someone else that they know who can attest or comment about your work)," that is considered smart because speaking to your primary reference is never going to go anywhere beyond a prepared answer from the reference and will get something unrehearsed from the secondary individual that is much closer to the truth.

I can debate the use of the term, "ethical."  Who decides ethics?  What is unethical about what they are doing?

"But I didn't give the reference to them?"

I am not aware of any ethics organization that will consider that a violation.

Is it normal?  No!  Employers, like people, are lazy.  They often take the path of least resistance.

Is it smart?  You bet it is!  What they are able to do is find out more of the truth that you will ever give them, then the references will never give them, so there are no surprises.

These people can also be a tiebreaker when there are references that might be lukewarm.

I also want to remind you that if an adverse reference result in you not being hired, you are entitled to, a copy of a receive a report under the Fair Credit Reporting Act of the references so that you can respond to the allegations or statements that were made. That will be sent to the employer.
