Standing Out in Your Job Search

Standing Out in Your Job Search

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

You don’t need to go to extremes to demonstrate you’re different in your resume or on an interview. Talk about worldclasswork in ways that people “get it.” Message leaders, not gatekeepers. Do things to cut the line instead of being a rule follower.

If you aren’t qualified, this won’t work. In jobmarkets like this one, you are competing with other qualified people. Doing things to stand out and to cut the line will help you get in the door.

A college student got his start in movies by dressing in one of his father’s suits, taking the Universal tour and jumping off the bus, finding an available studio to work in to edit his first film. After doing this a few times, he was found by an executive who asked him what he was doing and showed him the film. The executive took the film to the President of Universal, whom he fought with to watch it.

After watching that short film, Stephen Spielberg was signed to his first contract to direct films.

World-class work, not half-a$$ed work. Cutting the line. Luck.
