Something Special and Barking Dogs
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
EP 160. An amazing football and Sir Winston Churchill combine for today’s show.
This is the No BS Coaching Advice Podcast, Episode 160. I’m your host, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and welcome. I like to spend some time at least once a week, talking with you about some elements of Life, the Universe, everything.
00:00:30,000 –> 00:00:49,000
And today I’m just going to start off with an amazing sports moment from yesterday’s NFL playoffs. The Kansas City Chiefs go into the second quarter down 24-0. This looks like a beatdown. This is an awful game. Receivers are dropping passes. Great punt returners, dropping the ball, turning it over. It looks like a blowout. How the hell do you suddenly wind up losing as the Houston Texans 52-31? Seriously, how does that happen?
00:00:50,000 –> 00:01:09,000
I think it starts off with a moment where the head coach, talking to the quarterback Patrick Mahomes, says something along the lines of, “you know, let’s pull it together. We’ve got plenty of time and let’s see if we can turn this around.”
00:01:10,000 –> 00:01:29,000
And that’s what they did. They turned it around. They scored touchdowns on seven possessions in a https://youtu.be/LsA1O26i360row. Seven possessions in a row! And I remember watching the quarterback and then listening to the audio because I didn’t hear the audio at the time where he’s walking over to his players going, “do something special next play! Do something special,” as a way of inspiring them to get their head back into the game because with all the drop passes that their great receivers had, now it would be really easy to turn their attention to themselves, and how they were screwing things up on such an important stage.
00:01:30,000 –> 00:01:49,000
For you, for you, remember, there’s always an opportunity to do something special.
00:01:50,000 –> 00:02:09,000
We’ll be back in a moment after a word from another one of our sponsors.
00:02:10,000 –> 00:02:29,000
There’s an old quote from Sir Winston Churchill. It says, “If I stop and throw a rock at every dog that barks, then I’ll never reach my destination.”
00:02:30,000 –> 00:02:49,000
Real straightforward and strong quote, isn’t it?
00:02:50,000 –> 00:03:09,000
And then I have to remember, not only to do something special, but understand that there are times that my button is pushed and that I may have my button pushed but that another person didn’t really install it. It’s from something in my past, that winds up being a distraction for me.
00:03:10,000 –> 00:03:29,000
And that’s why I’m the barking dog under those circumstances. And I’m investing a lot of mental real estate, throwing stones at myself. Where will what I need come from, unless I stop that and go back to focus on where I need to get to. I think that’s the simplest thing. I need a reminder with, I suspect many of you do too.
00:03:30,000 –> 00:03:49,000
