Should I Take a Job With a More Junior Title But Better Pay?

“I’m interviewing with a big company where the pay is better, but the title is more junior than the one I have now. Is it worth the change if I have to take a step back in title? The bigger company is more prestigious.” Leadership development expert Kimberly Brown responds, “Titles are subjective in the workplace. A vice-president at one company may be doing the same level of work as a manager at another; it all depends on the hierarchy created within that organization and the title structure they have developed. I wouldn’t let a title change be the determining factor in your final decision.”
My response:
Although in the specific circumstances discussed in the article, yes, it is worth it, usually, I advise people to NOT accept the arbitrary “either/or” requirements of the question. Who says it has to be one way or the other? Answer: The employer who gets a bargain of someone with greater capabilities for a lesser price. The question that requires you to accept it can be one way or the other is usually a false dichotomy that advantages the party posing the question.
